This is the core difference. Wispr Flow does its recognition in the cloud: your speech is sent to Wispr’s servers, turned into text there, and sent back. That is how it stays fast and consistent across devices, and Wispr has put real work into privacy controls on top of it. But the audio does leave your machine, and there is no fully offline mode.
talat runs the recognition on your own device, with the model bundled in the app, so your voice never goes anywhere. It keeps working with the network off, there is no account to create, and nothing is registered against you. For dictating anything you would not want on someone else’s servers, that is the whole point.
Your model, your rules.
Both tools turn raw speech into clean, punctuated text, but they differ in how. Wispr Flow runs its own fixed formatting. talat sends the finished text through the model you choose, Claude, GPT, or a local one, with your own key and your own instructions, so you can tune how it reads, or switch it off entirely. It is off by default and configurable per app.
That is the practical upshot: the quality of the cleanup is only as good as the model behind it, and with talat you pick the model rather than being handed one. If a better model comes out next month, you just point talat at it.
Where Wispr Flow is the better tool.
Wispr Flow has a couple of genuine advantages talat doesn’t match. The first is reach: it runs on phones as well as desktops, so if you dictate on the move, or want the same tool on iOS and Android, it covers you where talat, a Mac and Windows desktop app, does not.
The other is consistent speed. Because Wispr runs in the cloud, how fast it feels doesn’t depend on your computer. talat is quick on a Mac, where it uses the Neural Engine, but on Windows its speed is more hardware-dependent, and on an older or lower-powered PC the local dictation can lag where a cloud tool wouldn’t. On low-end Windows hardware, that is a real point for Wispr.
